  1. 0.4.29latest

Photo is faster on large documents

A brush under many styles, blur and sharpen, the wand and healing after long work, repeated undo and wheel zoom no longer stall. History keeps changes as tiles and no longer eats memory.

    What changed

    Improved

    • Releasing a brush on a bottom layer under dozens of styles no longer stalls; the brush, eraser and clone stamp draw real pixels right away.
    • Blur and sharpen brushes load the interface four times less.
    • The wand and spot healing stay fast after long work: only document changes go to the background thread.
    • Repeated undo and wheel zoom on documents with dozens of layers are instant.
    • History keeps changes as tiles: 30 heals take 59 MB instead of 690; the total is capped at a quarter of memory.
    • Fixed: a layer baked from old history steps could change slightly when the project was saved.
  2. 0.4.28

Photo without the PC load, the pen and gradients as in Photoshop

Brushes, the eraser, the airbrush and smudge no longer load the computer: moving the mouse no longer rebuilds the document, and a stroke draws only its new dabs. The pen and gradients work as in Photoshop, PDF and AI open and drop, and an uploaded code folder has its own link card.

    What changed

    New

    • Pen: Alt over a segment bends it, Ctrl gives temporary Direct Selection, a click on an open end continues the path, Alt in Direct Selection copies a path.
    • Gradients: Perceptual, Linear and Classic methods, smoothness and dither, offset and Align with layer — for the tool and for shape fills.
    • PDF and AI can be dropped onto the canvas or the window from Explorer, and Open on a PDF makes a document from the chosen page at the resolution you set.
    • Library, Code: uploaded code folders, their link card (access, expiry, password, views) and a Choose folder… button.

    Improved

    • Moving the mouse over the canvas no longer rebuilds the document: on 30 layers a frame went from 111 to 7 ms, and the brush and eraser at 4K take half the CPU.
    • Airbrush, spray, smudge, liquify and mask painting draw only what is new: no stalls even on large documents.
    • Undo and autosave of large documents are several times faster.
    • The Gradient tool defaults to Perceptual, as in Photoshop 2023; the former look is Classic with smoothness 0.
    • The preview is rebuilt when the window moves to a monitor with another scale; text drawn before its font loaded is redrawn in that font.
  3. 0.4.27

No white window when Win + Shift + S starts lacuna

When lacuna is closed and Win + Shift + S starts it, the main window can no longer flash on screen: until it is first shown it waits beyond the screen edge and takes its place in the center only when you open it. The start journal now records any stray window if one still appears.

    What changed

    Improved

    • Win + Shift + S with lacuna closed: only the area selection shows, no white rectangle.
    • The main window opens where it always did, centered on the main monitor, without delay.
    • The start journal notices stray windows from the first milliseconds, lacuna's own included.
  4. 0.4.26

PDF and AI in Photo, a magic wand that no longer crashes

Smart objects from PDF and Illustrator are redrawn from the file and stay sharp at any zoom; PDF and AI can be placed into a document from the page of your choice. The crash of the Magic Wand and other tools at some window widths is fixed, and tool options now fold into «…» one by one.

    What changed

    New

    • PDF and AI inside smart objects are drawn from the file: the page and box Photoshop chose, sharp at any zoom, with perspective, warp and smart filters.
    • File → Place Embedded…: an image, SVG, PDF or AI as a new smart object above the active layer; for a PDF, a page picker with thumbnails.
    • Replace Contents… accepts PDF, AI and SVG.
    • The Microsoft Store version: Compress in lacuna, Edit in lacuna and Copy lacuna link in the Explorer file menu.

    Improved

    • Fixed the «Something went wrong» crash on a Magic Wand click and in other tools with an options bar at some window widths.
    • Tool options fold into «…» one by one, least important first: at a 1100 px window almost everything stays visible.
    • Advanced on the wand closes only on your click, not by itself when a setting returns to zero.
  5. 0.4.25

Gradient shapes, a Photoshop-like pen and smart filter masks in PSD

Shapes in Photo take a gradient fill in five styles and stay sharp at any scale. The pen adds and deletes points on a path and converts them, and a painted smart filter mask is no longer lost when a PSD is saved.

    What changed

    New

    • Gradient fill for shapes: linear, radial, angle, reflected and diamond, with the same colour bar as the Gradient tool. Gradient shapes from a PSD open editable.
    • Pen over a selected shape: a click on a segment adds a point, a click on a point deletes it; Shift turns auto add and delete off for a moment.
    • Alt with the pen over a point: a click makes a corner, a drag a smooth point. An Alt drag with path selection copies the path.

    Improved

    • A painted smart filter mask is saved in the PSD while the object has not been moved or changed; otherwise the export dialog warns that the mask will not be in the file.
    • The pen cursor shows what a click will do; tool tips and the mouse keys help are updated.
    • The app is lighter: the old screenshot editor is gone, every capture opens in Photo.
  6. 0.4.24

Vector shapes and the pen in Photo, Win + Shift + S as the one key

Photo gets vector shapes: the pen, editing points and handles, uniting and subtracting paths. Shapes stay sharp at any scale and go into PSD as Photoshop shape layers. When Win + Shift + S opens lacuna, it is the selection key: lacuna no longer holds its own default keys for it.

    What changed

    New

    • Shapes (U) are vector: rectangle, ellipse, polygon, star and line keep their parameters until their points are edited; fill, stroke inside, centred or outside, dashes, caps and corners.
    • Pen (P): a click sets a corner, a drag a smooth point, a click on the first point closes the path.
    • Path selection and direct selection (A, Shift + A): points, handles, segments, a frame, arrows and Delete.
    • Unite, subtract, intersect and exclude — paths of one layer or of several shapes; the result stays curves.

    Improved

    • PSD: shapes are saved as Photoshop shape layers with a vector mask, fill and stroke; a solid-colour shape from a PSD opens editable.
    • Rasterize layer works for shapes and text.
    • Annotations moved from A to N: A now selects paths, as in Photoshop. Reassign it in Keyboard shortcuts.
    • When Windows hands Win + Shift + S to lacuna, Select area is Win + Shift + S, and Ctrl + PrtSc and Ctrl + Alt + T are no longer taken; your own keys stay.
    • The video editor accepts a key taken by a global lacuna key: while the lacuna window is in front, it does the editor action.
  7. 0.4.23

Smart objects like in Photoshop, and folders from anywhere

Smart objects in Photo transform along their own axes and keep perspective, warp and smart filters without rasterizing, and replacing contents updates every copy. A folder can be shared from the empty space inside it, from WSL, or by dropping it on the lacuna window.

    What changed

    New

    • Smart filters: Gaussian blur, motion blur and noise are kept as a list and recomputed from the source; Photoshop filters lacuna does not draw are kept and go back into the PSD.
    • Share the open folder: right-click the empty space inside a folder or on the desktop.
    • WSL folders can be shared; Linux system folders and the whole home folder cannot.
    • A folder dropped on the lacuna window opens the share card.

    Improved

    • Ctrl + T on a smart object shows a frame along its axes; perspective and Warp are kept as object parameters and redrawn from the source.
    • Replace contents updates every copy of the object in one step.
    • TIFF and SVG sources are redrawn on enlargement without losing sharpness.
    • The Microsoft Store version gets Explorer items for folders — right in the Windows 11 menu.
  8. 0.4.22

Pause and a recording indicator in games, the taskbar stays

Recording can be paused right from the overlay, and while the overlay is closed a small recording indicator sits in a corner of the screen. The taskbar no longer hides when the overlay opens over a windowed game. In Photo, filters work on masks, blend modes match Photoshop, and HEIC photos from an iPhone open.

    What changed

    New

    • Overlay: Pause / Resume for any running recording, key 6; the timer stops in the overlay, the main window and the tray.
    • A recording indicator over the game: a dot and the time in a chosen corner while the overlay is closed. Clicks go through to the game and it never ends up in the recording; it can be turned off in the overlay settings.
    • Photo opens HEIC and HEIF from an iPhone, 10-bit included: rotation and Display P3 colours are respected.

    Improved

    • One microphone switch for the running recording — from the overlay, the Recording page and the tray; a recording started in the main window keeps the microphone on its own track and switches it on the fly.
    • Photo: noise, lens correction and content-aware fill work on a layer mask.
    • Photo: blend modes were checked against the Photoshop formulas; Soft Light, Hard Mix and Exclusion now match it.
    • Paragraph text in Photo wraps by the Unicode rules: after a hyphen, never at a no-break space or inside an emoji.

    Fixed

    • The taskbar no longer hides when the overlay opens over a windowed game or the desktop; the bottom bar of the overlay sits above it, and a click on the taskbar closes the overlay.
  9. 0.4.21

A live game under the overlay, and autostart works again

The overlay no longer freezes the game: the live picture keeps running under the panel. Starting with Windows works again and survives updates, and the first Win + Shift + S after turning on the PC no longer shows a white window. Recording gets 2560 × 1440, and Pro no longer has a per-file limit.

    What changed

    New

    • Recording: a 2560 × 1440 size.
    • Pro and the Pro trial: no per-file limit, only the total storage.

    Improved

    • In-game overlay: the game keeps running live under the panel, with no snapshot and no dimming. Select area freezes the frame only while selecting; right after Alt + backquote the Enter key starts nothing.
    • Every lacuna window shows the theme colour from the first moment; Win + Shift + S opens the selection at once and never opens the main window.
    • Photos are no longer squeezed to fit the size limit: a photo above the plan limit is refused honestly, with both sizes.

    Fixed

    • Starting with Windows was lost after an update: the choice is now kept separately, the installer preserves it, and the app repairs a missing entry by itself. Turn Start with Windows on once if it is off.
    • A white window on the first Win + Shift + S after turning on the PC.
    • The More arrow on the Recording page is an arrow again, not a line.
  10. 0.4.20

    Much faster compression and 1440p

Video compression is several times faster: Automatic encodes on an NVIDIA graphics card, the processor uses all its threads, and the presets were rebuilt from measurements. 1440p is available, and the resolution changes only when you pick it.

    What changed

    New

    • 1440p resolution in Compress and in Compress and upload.

    Improved

    • Automatic compresses Quality and Balance on an NVIDIA graphics card: a 1440p60 clip in Quality takes 3.8 s instead of 20, 4K 3.4 s instead of 24, and the processor stays almost free.
    • Without an NVIDIA card compression uses every processor thread and the graphics card decoder; Quality is now visually lossless, Minimum smaller and cleaner.
    • Compression you start yourself runs at normal priority; audio from a recording is copied without re-encoding, and the progress shows the time left.
    • Compress and upload uses the chosen preset and no longer squeezes a video to fit the size limit. If the compressed file is still above your plan limit, it is not uploaded: lacuna shows both sizes and the compressed file stays with you.
  11. 0.4.19

The replay rides out heavy moments in games

The replay no longer switches off when a game takes the computer for a few seconds: video and audio wait up to 20 seconds, and after a final failure the replay restarts itself and keeps its history. The microphone in the replay keeps the same 20 seconds.

    What changed

    Improved

    • Replay: video rides out processing stalls of up to 20 seconds, like audio. The clip shows a frozen frame for that time, and audio and picture stay in sync.
    • If video processing does stop for good, the replay restarts with its saved history instead of switching off.
    • The replay microphone track keeps 20 seconds instead of 3: after a long stall the start of a clip is no longer silent.
    • On processors with efficiency cores, Windows no longer moves replay and recording capture to the slow cores.
  12. 0.4.18

Replay length right in the overlay

Pick how many minutes the replay keeps right in the overlay — on the fly, without a restart and without losing what is recorded. Replay capture and recording now run at normal priority, so clips freeze less when a game loads the computer.

    What changed

    New

    • Overlay: a replay length button next to the switch in all three looks. The same values as on the Replay page; longer lets the buffer grow, shorter keeps the latest minutes, and the overlay says how much beforehand. Memory and disk limits are the same as on the page.

    Improved

    • Replay capture and recording without a microphone run at normal priority: when a game loads the processor, clips freeze less. Compression and upload preparation stay at lower priority.
  13. 0.4.17

Recording from the overlay, working montage keys and a steady replay

The in-game overlay now records plain video too. Every montage shortcut works again, the replay no longer crashes when a game loads the computer, and you can share a code folder right from Explorer. A new lac.pics icon and smart objects in PSD.

    What changed

    New

    • Video recording from the overlay: the Start recording button or key 5, a timer, the microphone on the fly and a Recording saved card with Open in lacuna, Show in folder and Link. There is one recording for the whole app: the overlay, the main window and the tray all show and stop it.
    • Explorer: right-click a folder, then Share folder with lacuna. The card shows what goes into the link and what stays home: node_modules, .git, builds and secrets never leave.
    • PSD smart objects open as smart objects: scale and rotate without losing quality, Replace contents, Edit contents in a new tab, and save back to PSD.
    • A new lac.pics icon in the app, the tray, the installer and Explorer. The tray icon turns red while recording.

    Improved

    • Montage: every shortcut works again. Before, after the first pick in any dropdown the keys went silent until a restart. Ctrl + Y now redoes, and lacuna global keys no longer take montage keys.
    • Photo: a mask unlinked from its layer moves and transforms on its own, PSD export keeps real masks, the 4 × 4 mesh warp bends the mask with the layer, and D and X work like in Photoshop.
    • Video before upload: vertical phone clips stay upright, and compression keeps exactly within the size limit.

    Fixed

    • The replay no longer crashes when a game loads the computer: audio survives video stalls of up to 20 seconds, and a lost output device is replaced with silence.
    • The replay no longer seems to switch itself on: while it recovers it shows as starting, the tray and the overlay switch it on and off explicitly, and Enter in the overlay no longer turns anything on by accident.
    • Photo keys no longer go silent after a pick in a dropdown.
  14. 0.4.16

In-game overlay, the replay ring and signed updates

An overlay over the game on Alt + backquote: screenshot, replay, recording, microphone and recent files without leaving the game. Replay is now a ring, PSD text stays text, and the app accepts only owner-signed updates.

    What changed

    New

    • In-game overlay: Alt + backquote (Alt + X when taken) opens a panel over the game: screenshot and area selection on a frozen frame, save the replay, recording, microphone, and recent screenshots and videos right in the overlay. Three looks in the settings: a bar at the top or bottom, a pad in the centre, a panel on the left or right.
    • PSD text opens as a text layer: retype it, change the font, size, colour and alignment. Fonts are matched by name; missing ones are substituted with a hint.
    • Masks in Photo: every editor tool also works on a layer mask.
    • System sound without lacuna itself: the short sounds of the app no longer end up in the clip.
    • Signed updates: the app installs only releases signed by the owner and checks the bundled engines before running them.
    • The lac.pics logo in the window title bar.

    Improved

    • Replay: a ring instead of the segment strip. The replay core was checked on every encoder and 20 bugs were fixed: the clip starts on a keyframe, audio stays in sync, and it recovers after failures.
    • The recording and replay source defaults to the whole screen in the app, the tray and the overlay until you pick another.
    • Toggles and checkboxes share one look, with no focus rings; toggle knobs are perfectly round at any display scale.
    • Before an upload the app checks the video itself and, when needed, compresses it to the server rules: the server keeps one version.
    • App windows open only their own pages; outside links go to the browser.
    • A blocked account is signed out of the app within a couple of minutes.

    Fixed

    • The buttons under the taskbar thumbnail are gone: they did not work. The taskbar recording indicator stays.
    • A PSD that declares huge layers is refused before decoding, not after running out of memory.
  15. 0.4.15

    Instant tab switching

Tabs switch without stutter, even on slower computers, and the montage editor switches its language on the fly completely.

    What changed

    Improved

    • A tab switch redraws only the page it needs: it takes 5–9 ms instead of 20–100, and slower computers no longer stutter. The replay status no longer loads the whole window every second.

    Fixed

    • Montage editor: after a language switch, Media, All files, Video and Music switch too.
  16. 0.4.14

Sign-in, your own lesson keys and fonts, and smoother animations

The app works once you sign in, and your files can stay on this computer only. Lesson mode keys and fonts are yours to set, animations are smoother, and the blank window on the first Win + Shift + S and the choose-an-app dialog after an update are gone.

    What changed

    New

    • Signing in is required: on first start you see the sign-in screen, through the browser or with a key. Files stay on this computer, and uploading to the site happens only if you turn it on.
    • Lesson mode: every action has its own key, in Hotkeys and in Settings → Lesson mode, with conflict checks and reset.
    • Lesson mode: font, size, weight, colour and outline for captions, step numbers, on-screen keys and the panel, with a live preview.

    Improved

    • Smoother animations: the replay ring grows evenly, New project no longer jerks, empty screens do not flicker when you come back to a tab, and toasts and dialogs appear softly.
    • After Sign out everywhere on the site, the app notices within 30 minutes and asks you to sign in again. Without internet it keeps working.

    Fixed

    • A blank window on the first Win + Shift + S after start: the lacuna window appears only when it is ready, and the action runs after loading.
    • After an update, Win + Shift + S no longer opens the choose-an-app dialog: lacuna restores its link when Windows had it chosen before.
    • A new Draw on screen key sometimes was not saved.
  17. 0.4.13

In-game overlay and the replay ring

Alt + ~ (the key above Tab) over a game: save a replay, grab a frame, mute the microphone and share the latest clips without leaving the game. Own sounds and cards in games, and Replay with a ring instead of the strip.

    What changed

    New

    • In-game overlay: Alt + ~ (the key above Tab) over a windowed or borderless game. Save the whole replay, the last 30 s or 1 min, turn replay on or off, grab the frame of the key press, mute the microphone without losing the buffer, and the 6 latest files with Copy file, Link and Compress. The overlay never shows in recordings or streams.
    • Three overlay styles — a bar at the top or bottom, a pad in the centre, a panel on the left or right — in Settings → In-game overlay.
    • Sounds in games: saved, replay on, off and error. The switch and volume are in Settings → Notifications.

    Improved

    • Replay: a ring instead of the strip — the time inside, the ring closes when the buffer is full, memory and source next to it as text.
    • In a borderless game, saving and turning replay on or off shows a short card on the game’s monitor, and after a full-screen game one summary: “This game: 3 replays, 2 snapshots”.
    • Screen snapshot captures the monitor of the active window and shows a card with Open, Copy and Link.
    • The list of anti-cheat games whose processes lacuna never opens has grown to 107.

    Fixed

    • A black frame of a full-screen game is no longer saved as a snapshot — you get a tip to switch to Borderless instead.
  18. 0.4.12

A dependable replay, mask fills and an honest export

Window replay survives sleep and a new title, a full-screen game lets you hear that the clip is saved, a fill with the mask selected changes the mask, and an export with motion blur no longer drops effects silently.

    What changed

    Improved

    • Replay in a full-screen game: a short Windows sound plays when a clip is saved or fails, and the card waits for the game to end (up to 30 minutes) instead of vanishing after 15 seconds.
    • The “Memory holds…” estimate counts the room kept for sound, so the promised replay length matches the real one.
    • Photo in English: new layers, groups and copies are called Background, Layer 1, Group 1 and “… copy”, adjustment layers take the name of their adjustment. Both blurs in the Filter menu are translated.
    • The installer is 7.2 MB smaller.

    Fixed

    • Window replay carries on after minimising, sleep or lock again, even when the window’s title has changed — a browser tab or a document.
    • AMD · H.264 works when the screen is connected to an NVIDIA card: replay no longer falls back to Compatible capture and the processor.
    • Start with lacuna no longer turns off a waiting replay or throws its history away.
    • After lacuna restarts, the chosen replay source is available and Turn on replay works.
    • The tray shows the real replay state after a failed recovery, and refusals (Ctrl + Alt + R with replay off, a double press) no longer stay on the page and in the tray.
    • Replay notifications and the tray tip are fully in English.
    • Photo: with the mask selected, a fill (Edit → Fill with foreground or background, Alt + Backspace, Ctrl + Backspace, the Fill tool) changes the mask, not the layer’s pixels. A colour lighter than 50 % grey reveals and a darker one hides, as with the brush; a flood fill compares the mask itself.
    • An export with motion blur on the AI interpolation, Motion vectors or Source frames engine no longer silently drops clip effects, filters, text, speed, transitions and transforms: it stops at once and suggests removing them or choosing the legacy method in Motion blur, which keeps them all.
    • Recording or replaying the window of a game guarded by an anti-cheat no longer opens the game’s process: the window is recognised without touching it.
    • The secure connection component is updated to close a known vulnerability.
  19. 0.4.11

Colour picker, ruler and the new editor

Screen colour to the clipboard in one shortcut, a ruler, pinning from a selection or the clipboard, a link card and the Photo editor for every capture — with GIF and Beautify.

    What changed

    New

    • Colour picker: Win + Shift + C — a loupe with a pixel grid, HEX, RGB, HSL, OKLCH or a CSS variable to the clipboard, palettes with export and a WCAG contrast check. In any selection, C copies the colour under the cursor.
    • Ruler: Win + Ctrl + Shift + M or M in a selection — distances, sizes and snapping to edges.
    • Pin on top straight from a selection (P) and from the clipboard (Win + Alt + V).
    • Link card: access, password, expiry, one-time link, view limit, QR and Markdown, BBCode and HTML formats.
    • After a replay is saved — Copy file, Link and Compress.
    • Explorer menu — Copy lacuna link.
    • The Photo editor for every capture: marks on their own layers, text and QR recognition, GIF and animated WebP, Beautify — background, padding, shadow and social sizes.

    Fixed

    • Screen text and Recognise QR work in the area selection again.
  20. 0.4.10

    Animated empty screens

Empty sections of the app now show what belongs there: nine screens play a short scene.

    What changed

    Improved

    • Recent, Library, Photo, Compress, saved replays, video capture, a new project and the window-hiding check each have their own four-second scene.
    • Animations pause when the window is minimized or the scene is out of view, and stay still with Windows’ “reduce motion”.
  21. 0.4.9

    Screen text in one shortcut

Press Ctrl + Alt + T and select an area — the recognized text is on your clipboard.

    What changed

    New

    • Screen text: Ctrl + Alt + T, then an area or a click on a window. If another program uses the shortcut, Ctrl + Alt + Shift + T works instead.
    • When there is no text in the area, the frame stays so you can select again right away.
    • The tray icon menu now has Instant link and Screen text.
  22. 0.4.8

    Instant link and pinned screenshots

Ctrl + Alt + PrtSc: select an area and the link to the screenshot is on your clipboard. Pin a screenshot above all windows, or read text and QR codes right in the selection.

    What changed

    New

    • Instant link: the screenshot uploads as link-only; the notification offers Open, Make private and Pin. If the upload fails, the screenshot stays in the library with Retry.
    • Screenshots pinned above all windows: zoom, opacity and click-through, up to 20 at once. They never get into recordings or screenshots.
    • Text and QR code recognition in an area selection, and Recognize in the screenshot editor.
    • Export to GIF and animated WebP with a file size estimate.

    Improved

    • The app’s connection to your account renews itself 30 days before it expires.
  23. 0.4.7

    Browser sign-in without codes

Confirm the sign-in on the website and the app picks up your account by itself. No account needed? Work without one.

    What changed

    New

    • After you sign in in the browser, the app opens and connects by itself — no codes to copy.
    • Continue without an account on the first screen: screenshots and recording work right away.
    • A “Check for updates at startup” switch in Version and updates.

    Improved

    • Labels and buttons no longer get selected by stray clicks; fields and logs select as before.
    • Link-only photos and videos show previews in messengers.
  24. 0.4.6

Recording sound in sync with the picture

The microphone no longer runs ahead of the video, system sound no longer clicks, and joining clips no longer shifts frames.

    What changed

    Improved

    • Region recording on NVIDIA graphics is encoded by the graphics card, with about five times less processor load.
    • Video editor: Join merges the selected clips into one, and several files land on a track one after another.
    • Numbers in editor fields change by dragging their label.

    Fixed

    • The microphone ran about a third of a second ahead of the picture; now sound and video match, in recordings and in Replay.
    • Clicks in recorded system sound.
    • Joining and export no longer shift the video or drop the last frames.
  25. 0.4.5

    Browser sign-in and true colours

The app connects to your account through the browser, and exported videos no longer look washed out.

    What changed

    New

    • Sign in with the browser on the account screen: confirm on the website and the app connects.

    Improved

    • A calmer interface: one main button per screen, no coloured badges, glows or extra animation.

    Fixed

    • Exported videos looked washed out; colours now match the source.
    • “As in project · 120” saved 60 frames per second.
    • A white window when starting with Windows.
    • Compress video: the finished file can be posted right away again.
  26. 0.4.4

Downloads from the website and updates

The first version the website hands out itself: from now on the app finds new versions on its own.

    What changed

    New

    • A download page with the installer’s version, size and checksum.
    • Region recording: move and resize the frame while recording, or pin it to a window.
    • Lesson mode: a pointer, drawing over the screen, a whiteboard and shortcuts.
    • After a screenshot or video uploads, its link is on your clipboard.

    Improved
