Extract audio from a video to MP3

Save a video’s sound as a separate file: MP3 plays everywhere, and M4A takes the video’s AAC with no loss. Audio files in WAV, FLAC and OGG can be turned into MP3 too.

Your file stays with you

The video is not uploaded to lac.pics or anywhere else: your browser processes it, on your device. No sign-up needed. You need an account only to save the result to lacuna and send a link: then the file goes to “Uploads” in your account.

Questions

Is the file uploaded to a server?

The video is processed in this tab, on your device: the FFmpeg engine (WebAssembly) is downloaded from lac.pics with the first job — about 30 MB — and then runs locally. The file is not sent anywhere. It reaches lacuna only if you press “Save to lacuna” and sign in.

MP3 or M4A?

MP3 plays everywhere. M4A keeps AAC — if the video’s sound is already AAC, it is moved as it is, with no loss of quality and in seconds.

Which MP3 bitrate should I choose?

192 kbps is enough for speech and most music, 320 for music where detail matters, 128 when a small file matters more.

How do I take sound from only part of a video?

Trim the video first in “Trim video”, then extract the audio from the result.
