Make a GIF from a video
Choose a video, mark a segment and get a GIF for a chat, a how-to or a website. You can also make an animated WebP: it is many times smaller than a GIF. Everything happens in your browser.

Formats and limits
| What | How |
|---|---|
| Formats | MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and more → GIF or WebP |
| Length | GIF — up to 60 seconds, WebP — up to 120 |
| Frames | 10, 15, 24, 30 fps, width as in the source or smaller |
| GIF colours | 256, 128, 64; pattern, diffusion or no dithering |
| Source | up to 200 MB |
Your file stays with you
The video is not uploaded to lac.pics or anywhere else: your browser processes it, on your device. No sign-up needed. You need an account only to save the result to lacuna and send a link: then the file goes to “Uploads” in your account.
Questions
Is the video uploaded to a server?
The video is processed in this tab, on your device: the FFmpeg engine (WebAssembly) is downloaded from lac.pics with the first job — about 30 MB — and then runs locally. The file is not sent anywhere. It reaches lacuna only if you press “Save to lacuna” and sign in.
Why is the GIF so big?
A GIF stores almost every frame in full and at most 256 colours. Lower the width or the frame rate, choose a shorter segment — or WebP. The approximate size is shown before converting.
How long can the animation be?
A GIF up to 60 seconds, an animated WebP up to 120. For a long video choose a segment: its start and end are set in seconds.
Will it have sound?
No: GIF and animated WebP store no sound. For a clip with sound choose MP4 in the same list of formats.
